El triunfo de los barrios / The triumph of neighbourhoods

¡Hola a todos! Queremos acabar la semana dedicando nuestra entrada a la recuperación de espacios  urbanos olvidados y en desuso. Sí, queremos hacerlo con una reivindicación y no porque seamos unas protestonas, que también, sino porque creemos firmemente en estas pequeñas grandes acciones que poco a poco están naciendo, creciendo y consolidándose en Valencia. Queremos hablaros de aquellos espacios que están siendo reconquistados por vecinos, colectivos y comerciantes con el objetivo de darles nuevos usos sociales y lúdicos, reconvertirlos y ponerlos a disposición de los barrios y los ciudadanos.

Hi everyone! We'd like to finish the week dedicating our post to the reclamation of forgotten and disused urban spaces. And yes, we do it with the intention of reclaiming them, not because we're whingers, but because we do firmly believe in these little big actions which are progressively being born, growing and consolidating in Valencia. We want to talk you about those spots being regained by neighbours, collectives and shopkeepers with the aim of giving them both social and ludic uses, reconvert them and open them to neighbourhoods and citizens alike. 

No son pocos los espacios y solares abandonados que inundan las calles. Pero tampoco son pocos los vecinos y asociaciones que se han plantado, se han organizado y han unido sus fuerzas para revitalizar distintas zonas de Valencia, redibujando el urbanismo de la ciudad.
Hoy vamos a centrarnos en uno de los solares más representativos en este sentido, el Solar Corona. Situado en el corazón del barrio del Carmen este proyecto se erige como un espacio ciudadano abierto a los vecinos y gestionado también por estos.

There is no shortage of abandoned spaces and sites inundating the streets. But there are also plenty of neighbours and associations who have decided to stand their ground, become organised and join their forces to try and revitalise several areas of the city, redrawing its urban planning. 
Today we're going to focus in one of the most emblematic sites among these, the Solar Corona. Nestled in the heart of the Carmen district, this project stands out as a space managed by neighbours and open to the whole local community. 

 

El Solar está situado en lo que se conoce como Arrabal "dels Tints" ya que antiguamente era en esta zona donde abundaban los talleres del gremio de tintoreros que utilizaban la acequia de la Rovella como desagüe. La calle Corona desembocaba a la altura de la calle Guillem de Castro en el antiguo Portal de la Corona o dels Tints (hoy ya desaparecido). Esta entrada a la ciudad se creó en el siglo XIV con la construcción de la muralla y se cerró al tráfico de caballerías y carruajes en el siglo XVII.

The site is located in what is known as the Suburb of Dyes. It was around this area that the dyers guild settled their workshops centuries ago because it enabled them an easy access to the Rovella, the main irrigation canal in the old town, where they would drain off their waste. Corona St. led into Guillem de Castro St. through the former Crown Door or Dyes Door (now gone). This entrance to the city was performed in the Christian wall back in the 14th century and was closed to steeds and coaches in the 17th. 

Reconvertido hoy en un espacio comunitario y participativo, este solar que lleva abandonado desde tiempos inmemoriales, está abierto a la celebración de actividades sociales y culturales, a la par que constituye uno de los pocos jardines que existen actualmente en el barrio. Si aún no lo conoces, déjate caer el primer y tercer miércoles de cada mes, pasea por el jardín y las ruinas que aún se conservan de un viejo taller, recorre el huerto urbano o simplemente siéntate y participa en sus asambleas.

After being restored into a participative space for the community, this site abandoned since time immemorial is now open to the celebration of cultural and social activities. Besides it is also one of the few gardens existing at the moment in this quarter. If you don't know it yet, drop by every first and third Wednesday of the month, take a walk through the garden and the remaining ruins of an ancient workshop, go across the urban orchard or just sit and take part in the assemblies. 

 

Así mismo, y bien cerquita del Solar Corona, ha nacido otro colectivo, Bosque Urbano El Carmen, un movimiento que surge con la voluntad de revitalizar el casco histórico y especialmente el entorno del mercado de Mossén Sorell. Como ellos dicen "es la demostración de que las cosas lógicas pueden materializarse".

Another collective has also been born really close to the Solar Corona, Bosque Urbano El Carmen (El Carmen Urban Forest), a movement whose will is revitalising the old town and especially the vicinity of the Mossén Sorell market. In their own words "it's the prove that logical things may become true". 

¿Qué han hecho? Plantar flores, instalar maceteros gigantes decorados por grafiteros, cubrir las paredes con fotografías y poner un banco en una plaza que hace apenas un año era utilizada como aparcamiento improvisado de vehículos. Los vecinos han creado con sus manos un pequeño bosque urbano, que cuidan con esmero, pero no quieren quedarse ahí. Su próximo objetivo es poder abrir al público el solar que se encuentra entre la Calle Alta y San Miguel, ahora tapiado.

What have they done? They've planted flowers, they've installed giant flowerpots decorated by graffiti artists, they've covered the walls with enormous pictures and they've placed a bench in a square that barely a year ago was used as an improvised parking for vehicles. The neighbours have created with their own hands a small urban forest they themselves care about, but they intend to go further. Their next goal is opening to the public the plot located between Calle Alta and San Miguel, currently walled.

Esta peculiar revitalización de los barrios viene de la mano del resurgir de los movimientos vecinales cívicos y este, amigos, es el verdadero pulso de la ciudad. ¡Buen fin de semana!

This peculiar revivification of the neighbourhoods goes hand in hand with the resurgence of civic community movements and this, dear friends, is the real heartbeat of the city. Have a nice weekend!
